Robert J. Dugan (1945 – 2010) served his profession and community continuously throughout his life.
Bob’s professional practice included both litigation and transactional areas of the law, but for the last 15 years he focused on real estate and corporate transactions as well as estate planning and probate law.
Bob was a highly respected member of the Grand Rapids Bar Association having served as its President, Treasurer and Trustee. In 1996, Bob was presented with the Donald R. Worsfold Award which the bar association occasionally gives to its most distinguished members.
Bob served the Grand Rapids community in many ways. He was active in the Grand Rapids Junior Chamber of Commerce and most recently was a member of the Board of Directors of Alliance for Health where he served as the Chair of the Evaluation Committee. Bob was a Hearing Officer for the Attorney Discipline Board for the State Bar of Michigan, and was an Agent and Secretary with the Charles M. Gates Jr. Foundation.
Bob was active in community organizations including the Grand Rapids Jaycees, the Grand Rapids Hockey Association, the Grand Rapids Symphony, and Good Will Industries.
Having suffered an abdominal aneurysm in 1991 which resulted in paralysis and left him wheel chair bound, Bob consistently assisted others with similar challenges in handling workplace and home adjustments. He often counseled others seeking to give them the benefit of his experience in an effort to assist them as they attempted to adjust to their own acquired physical disabilities.
While his professional service and career recognitions contribute to his legacy, the daily example of grace and integrity in handling his physical limitations speaks most to the lasting impression he left on all who met him.
Bob will be missed by the clients he served, his colleagues and peers. Contributions can be made in his name to Mary Free Bed or Disability Advocates of Kent County.
